Baron-Cohen, S., Allen, J., Gillberg, C.. (2001). Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT). Measurement Instrument Database for the Social Science. Retrieved 15.08.2020, from www.midss.ie Key references: G. Baird, T. Charman, A. Cox, S. Baron-Cohen, J. Swettenham, S. Wheelwright and A. Drew, (2001) Screening and surveillance for autism and pervasive developmental disorders Archives of Diseases in Childhood 84:468-475 Primary use / Purpose: The CHAT allows autism to be detected at 18 months of age. In the first component, the parent is asked 9 questions about their child's behaviour. The second part involves 5 items of direct observation and interaction with the child. Background: Prior to this, Autism was generally not detected before 3 years of age. As early intervention is vital, this instrument was designed to make detection possible from 18 months. The Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT) is administered by a health professional, both by asking the parent questions and directly observing and interacting with the child. Psychometrics: Psychometric properties are determined in a 6 year follow up study of children assessed by the CHAT (Baird, Charman, Baron-Cohen et al., 2009).
