Both the index of severity for osteoarthrosis (OA) of the hip and the index of severity for OA of the knee "are believed to be of value in therapeutic trials in OA of weight-bearing joints. They also provide a measurable appraisal of patient status at different stages of OA, provide information on the long-term natural disease course, benefit from a “chondroprotective” drug, and establish a scale of disability to direct orthopedic intervention such as arthroplasty or tibia osteotomy."
