The most common cause of ICU morbidity and mortality is the development of progressive physiologic dysfunction in organ systems remote from the site of the primary disease process, a phenomenon described as multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The MOD score was developed as a prototype measure that would optimally reflect the extent and severity of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome as an outcome in critical illness, based on the model proposed by the American College of Chest Physicians/Society of Critical Care Medicine consensus conference on definitions of sepsis and multiple organ failure. Marshall, John C., et al. "Multiple organ dysfunction score: a reliable descriptor of a complex clinical outcome." Critical care medicine 23.10 (1995): 1638-1652.
